Typeface Tuesday 19

July 6th, 2010 § Leave a Comment

I peeped this on Friends of Type at the beginning of the month. This is a great site if you love type as I do. I do find it funny how the people in my life keep directing me to this site.

“Dedicated to all of my fellow letter-makers out there. We are alphastructaesthetitologists: Teachers and students of the art of fine letter-making…or something like that. — Jon Contino

Storm Magazine

The DSU (Dalhousie Student Union) ask me if I would be interested in working with them on a campus life mag, and no doubt that answered YES. Now at that time I didn’t think that the first issue would have to be done it in 5 days, logo (section titles, yadda yadda). As rushed and stressed as it was I still had fun and I already am starting to work on the second issue. This next issue I will really go balls out and produce something that makes me giggy with excitement. I love projects like this. So here is STORM: the student oriented magazine from the DSU

Typeface Tuesday:6 Neatly Trimmed Beard

August 4th, 2009 § Leave a Comment

Civilized, a new microdistillery in northern Michigan, new branding by Minneapolis-based Neatly Trimmed Beard.

“The concept is based on the woodland gentleman of yore; the sort of man who cut wood for a living and wrestled grizzlies for fun but still found time to wax his mustache and comb some pomade through his hair.”

That mad me laugh. Great writing giving a great visual.

Typeface Tuesday:3

June 16th, 2009 § 1 Comment

ok so for this edition of Typeface Tuesday I have posted the cover of the Dalhousie Student Union Annual Report b/c well I did it. I had fun setting this up. The concept is that this year the report will be an interactive pdf file to dnld — no more with the printed version. So I came up with the tag line “We felt it was time to unbind”. Hence the cover idea sitting on the desk, and the old polaroids vs the new flash drive. Let me what you think. (I do a lot of repeat patterns)

My Personal Top 10 Podcasts

February 11th, 2009 § Leave a Comment

Ok I am quite a fiend for the podcast. I dnld so many its kind of crazy. I do search the  iTunes store for new ones at least once a month. Now with that said for what ever reason most subscriptions don’t stay in my iTunes for more than a couple episodes. But those that do I can’t wait for. Podcasts have enlightened me to new music, fashion trends, art, and well just in all makes me feel more diverse in my cultural understanding. I do realize how much of a art star this makes me sound.

With that said I wanted to share my top ten. This was amuch harder task than I thought it would. Looking back on it I almost changed it to my top 15 but I said something to myself that one of my profs said to me in art school — “art comes out of being able to edit ones creative process”. So I stuck with my 10. Now since it was hard enough to limit myself to 10 they by no means in any particular order.

  1. Designing Minds; a video podcast produced by Zoom-In Online (adobe) that showcases the creative leaders of the design industry. From young emerging to the now giants this is a most for any designer.
  2. Maple Mothership; an all Canadian hip hop radio show. This audio cast is the best representation of what’s avail in the Canadian hip hop industry. Recognize.
  3. Cool Hunting Video; for any of you that know the website coolhunting.com this is their video podcast. I have found so many new inspirations via this cast its one that I wish came out every week.
  4. XLR8R Audio; this printed magazine has been a staple for me for years and to see them produce this podcast has lead me to a number of new artists. One of my now favs for example is Laser Sword.
  5. XLR8R TV; the only thing better than listening to a new artist is watching them being interviewed while playing laser tag, or following them around the city as the set up and play gorilla style shows in random places.
  6. The Circle Research Show; I use to listen to these boys on college radio in Toronto when I was in high school and now I get to walk my dog and listen to a great mix of real funk, soul, old school, and new school  hip hop. I always catch a show when I get there to visit family.
  7. In The Closet with Men.Style.com; This is a video cast of two guys talking fashion and well toys for men. Each episode is short but a really great showcase into high fashion for men with taste.
  8. Fader TV; I like this cast better than Fader audio simply b/c I find way more captivating to watch artists talk about their work than to listen to someone else hold down the conversation with a list of questions.
  9. Tweed Museum of Art; Graphic Design Lectures; Now this is a video cast for those that can sit and watch for extended periods of time. The average episode is an hr plus but is so worth it. Not being in school makes me crave new knowledge and well this is all I need to give me that new perspective. I do learn from each lecture. With that said yes some are far more interesting than others but I do watch every one (just may not be in one sitting).
  10. Weekly Drop; Ok yes I am fully aware that the boys haven’t (for reasons that are beyond them) put out an episode since Jan. of 08, this is still the best fashion streetwear/ sneaker culture podcast ever attempted. The only thing that would have this better is if it was a video cast. Come one Rob, Jeff, & Frank talking shit outside the Hard Rock during Magic. Haha I can see it now. (Richard from Triumvir would disagree with me I’m sure)

I encourage all of you to search and find your favorites b/c they are out there. Even if you don’t have an iPhone or iTouch (get one first of all) you can watch the videos for the most part in a big window in iTunes. We do live in this very small global village lets really use it to the advantages that it allows for.

Where Am I?
